Do you want to input data into Salesforce? Are you wondering what process you must apply? In this article, we will discuss about the use of dataloader while importing information.

Before you import data in, you must make an Import task. When making the task, you can actually save and run it.  When you create an Import task and import data, you can easily import the same type of data without having to create another task and running it. These tasks can also be run automatically while you get busy at other tasks. Building a new task is also easy if you use an old task as a template.

Steps for Creating an Import Task

The first and foremost thing you need to do is go to the top menu bar and click New Task.

Then you have to select Import.

# Choosing what to Connect, Operate and the Object in which to Import Data

  • There will be a dropdown menu from where you can choose your connection. As such, the details with which you login, act as default connection. But, if you want to utilize a different Salesforce connection, you can implement the ‘+’ icon present beside the connection dropdown.
  • Choose the type of operation from Upsert, Insert and Update.
  • Choose the object, into which you want to import data. For instance, Contact, Account, Lead, etc are some of the objects.

# Uploading the File

  • You can choose the file from a cloud repository or get it from a local directory.
  • There will be a dotted rectangle into which you can either drag and drop the file or upload .CSV file.

# Measuring the Fields

Now, you have to measure the CSV columns as per Salesforce fields. If there is any header that matches with the Salesforce object fields and input file, it will automatically be mapped. In case you desire to delete a mapping, there is a trash can beside the measured Salesforce field, on which you can click.

Measuring source fields in a way that leads to many destination fields

A source filed can be mapped into numerous destination fields. The Copy icon beside the name of the source field helps in obtaining multiple destination fields.

  • Upserting data

Upserting is a mixture of both updating and inserting. If the data already exists it has to be updated, if it does not, it needs to be inserted. Take the help of to experience smooth upserting of data.

A column must be mapped to an ID field. This column performs the function of a key while conducting an upsert.

  • Inserting data

While inserting data you must see to it that all relevant fields are mapped. Or else, you cannot move ahead.

  • Updating data

A column must be mapped to Object ID while running updates. For instance, you will come across a field named ‘Contact ID,’ in case you are importing Contacts. Updates cannot be conducted without mapping a column.

# Saving and Running the Task

The final step of the wizard shows the summary screen with the main information for the task. This is the page where you can opt to choose the name of your task. You also have the freedom to choose between Batch API and Bulk API.

In order to save the task, click ‘Save’ and then run it afterwards. You can also opt for ‘Save and Run’ for saving the task and running it immediately.
